April 8th, 2009:
South African Airways flies directly to Buenos Aires!
Today at 15.55 flight SA226 from Johannesburg landed at the Ezeiza International Airport. This is the first of a twice weekly flight that now reconnects South Africa and Argentina with this national carrier.
SAA did not fly directly to Argentina since 2001.

December 18th, 2008:
Aerolineas Argentinas nationalised!
After a long and complicated legislative process the Argentine national carrier, Aerolineas Argentinas and Austral, was nationalised after members of both houses of Congress decided that the Spanish company, Marsans, who owned the airline for the last 10 years did not provide a high quality service with Argentine interests at heart.
Marsan has strongly objected this decision.

November 18th:

Argentina's president signed deals on civilian nuclear energy with her Algerian counterpart during a visit to Algeria.

President Kirchner and President Abdelaziz Bouteflika agreed to "broaden our relations and reinforce our cooperation."

November 16th:

Pres. Cristina Fernández de Kirchner encouraged world leaders on the G20 summit in Washington DC to support a productive capitalism rather than a financial capitalism aimed at empty stale profits.


August 13th: The opposition as well as government members request that the National Institute of Census and Statistics (INDEC) is no longer controlled by Moreno, Secretary of Commerce.
The inflation index for July was 0.4% and private surveys and studies show an inflation of 1.2% for the same period.

August 13th: The soybean harvest is expected to reach 50 million tons despite governmental efforts to discourage this crop.

August 12th: The Argentine government bought the Treasury bonds they had previously sold so as to diminish the negative impact on the stock exchange market.
August 11th: The Argentine government sold Treasury bonds with 15% interest to Venezuela.
President Chávez immediately sold these bonds.

July 14th-16th: The International Trade Initiative to Buenos Aires took place.
A South African delegation of businesspeople and government officials arrived in Argentina and took part of this initiative to promote more trade between the two countries.

July 18th: Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner cancelled tax increases on agricultural exports, after months of protests.

July 17th: The VicePresident, Julio Cobos, voted against the governmental tax-increase resolution for grain at the Senate and the bill was rejected. This gives hope to farmers and society in general for a peaceful solution

July 15th: Farmers gather over 250,000 people whereas populist gathering organised by former President, Néstor Kirchner only gather 90,000.

The liaison committee which links the four farmers' associations yesterday announced a new "action plan" to be implemented until next Wednesday, when the Senate will vote on the controversial export duties scheme bill, already approved by the Lower House. The farm leaders summoned farmers to return to the roadsides, and to a march to take place in Buenos Aires city on Tuesday, and announced that the "green tent" will be set up again in front of the Congress building.

July 10th: Aerolíneas Argentinas to be nationalized
The government will send a bill to Congress to renationalize Aerolíneas Argentinas.

July 10th: Another sign of Argentine economic cooling
Rent demand is falling due to the ongoing conflict between government and farmers. Renting of houses and apartments has dropped as well as that for business purposes. Sales have also decreased.

July 9th: Argentine Glacier Sheds Ice in Rare Winter Breakup
Part of Argentina's Perito Moreno glacier collapsed on Wednesday, the first time large chunks of ice have broken off during the southern hemisphere winter.
The Patagonian glacier known as the "White Giant" is one of Argentina's biggest attractions. The river of ice 30 km long ends in a sheer wall blocking Lago Argentino where large pieces tumble into the water from time to time

July 8th: Cow burps help Argentines study climate change
Attaching a red plastic tank to a cow's back and connecting it through a tube to the animal's stomach, scientists say they can trap bovine burps and analyze them.
"When we got the first results, we were surprised. Thirty percent of Argentina's (total greenhouse) emissions could be generated by cows," said Guillermo Berra, a researcher at the National Institute of Agricultural Technology.
